Australia's Beef Exports in August: Sustained Explosive Growth, with Exports to China Exceeding 20,000 Tonnes for 7 Consecutive Months
Australia's beef exports are still expected to break historical records in 2025, with shipment volumes in August continuing the recent strong momentum. According to the latest monthly data released by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), the total export volume of fresh and frozen beef to all destinations last month reached 135,570 tonnes, marking the second-highest record in history, only after the 150,000 tonnes recorded in the previous month.
In its half-yearly cattle industry forecast update for September released on Monday, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) estimated that Australia's beef export volume (on a shipped weight basis) would hit 1.5 million tonnes in the 2025 calendar year. This projection is supported by Australia's continuous leverage of the global supply tightness – major competitor markets such as the United States and Brazil are facing supply constraints due to declining production and the impact of tariffs.
The basis for this forecast lies in the following: the number of cattle slaughtered this year is expected to increase by 8.6% to 9.02 million head, driven by stable live cattle supply and a slightly expanded processing capacity. As the United States has begun its herd rebuilding phase, and Brazil is confronting herd contraction after a period of large-scale slaughter and recovery from droughts – coupled with the tariff barriers it faces when exporting to the United States – Australia will have a unique advantage in meeting the growing international demand over the next one to two years.
