Brazilian beef factories have suspended production for the United States, and a large quantity of in-transit goods will be diverted to China
Affected by the U.S. policy of imposing an additional 50% tariff on all imported products from Brazil, Brazilian beef processing enterprises have decided to temporarily suspend beef production and processing operations specifically for the U.S. market. Roberto Perosa, President of the Brazilian Meatpackers' Association (Abiec), pointed out that this tariff measure has made it necessary to renegotiate all signed export contracts to the United States. Perosa emphasized that under the current tariff level, Brazil's beef exports to the United States in 2025 are no longer economically viable.
Based on this, the previous expectation of the Brazilian industry to double the volume of beef exports to the United States in 2025 will be reassessed. At the same time, there is uncertainty about the follow-up handling plans for container goods currently stranded at Brazilian ports or in the middle of sea transportation, which are destined for the United States. It is expected that most of the goods originally planned to be shipped to the United States will be diverted to alternative markets, mainly including China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
"Market adjustment strategies include seeking new international partners and exploring access to potential emerging markets. However, the most direct solution is to redirect goods to existing export markets, especially China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. These markets are the industry's primary alternatives when the U.S. market is temporarily unable to accept them," he stated at the event.
Perosa said that the industry is still "conducting in-depth evaluations" on how to adjust the production layout to achieve product transfer. He is currently in the United States and plans to meet with representatives of importers. "We are closely monitoring the progress of intergovernmental negotiations and actively collaborating with importers at the private level to explore ways to try to prompt the U.S. government to adjust its policy stance on Brazilian products."
