Juan Francisco Carrasco: hope to achieve a long-term mussel trade relationship with China
2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Chile. Bilateral trade between China and Chile has grown at an annual rate of 14% on average over many years. Despite the great shock the Covid-19 pandemic has caused to the world economy, the pair have seen a great increase in year-on-year trade deals in 2020 and Q1 of 2021, showing strong resilience.

Located in southeast of South America, Chile has a long and narrow territory, boasting a superior and diverse climate, very beautiful and varied natural landscape, as well as over 4000 kilometers of coastline. Chile is called as “the country of horizon”, providing a superior environment for Chile’s numerous seafood products.
There is no doubt that Chilean mussels are the top representative of Chilean seafood, with unique taste, color, texture and size recognized by the pickiest gourmets, which also are high-quality products of star recommended by renowned chefs.
“Our mussels grow in the sea area of southern Chile close to Antarctica, free of pollution, in water of suitable coldness and purity at temperature of 5 to 10 degrees all year round, and containing rich nutrients,” introduced at the 2nd “828” Frozen Product Exchange Festival by Mr. Juan Francisco Carrasco, Greater China manager of St. Andrews Food, Chile.
Strict control to meet high-quality requirements of seafood consumers around the world.
Currently, hundreds of enterprises including high and new technology companies have been engaged in mussel production which is the second largest agricultural industry in Chile, covering all processes from breeding, fishing, processing, up to shipping. Chile has become the leading exporter of mussels in the world with its mussel products having successfully entered main markets in Europe, North America and Asia.
St. Andrews Food, Chile, the world’s largest mussel export company by far, with an annual production of 40,000 metric tons, gets a large market share in France and Spain, as well as one of the first batch of companies exporting mussels to China.

In-depth understanding of and meeting the growing demand of seafood products with superior quality, healthy nutrition and reasonable prices for China and even global customers, is a high standard goal which many seafood exporters in Chile have been pursing.
Finally, Mr.Juan Francisco Carrasco mentioned that, China and Chile share a traditional friendship and are indispensable strategic partners.
